Call for Papers First Annual Duke-UNC Graduate Conference on Islamic Studies Deadline for Proposal Submission: |

The
Programs in Islamic Studies at
We encourage proposals that are interdisciplinary in nature and which engage the
subject from any number of perspectives and disciplines. The concept of
“Culture” permits the spectrum of topics to be quite broad, across not only
time, but geographical space, as well. Topics can address, but are not limited
to, law, theology, Qur`anic exegesis, mysticism, politics, economics,
literature, gender, race, and popular culture, for example. We encourage the
subject to be addressed from any number of perspectives: historical,
theoretical, philological, anthropological, or literary, inasmuch as these terms
imply a methodology in approaching the study of Islam. However, although a wide
variety of topics is encouraged, we expect submissions will address the idea of
Culture to some capacity as it can be broadly understood, which would permit an
understanding of Culture as being entirely distinct from or inherently embedded
in Islam as a subject of study.
We will accept proposals for individual papers from graduate students at any
stage: pre- or post-dissertation. Junior scholars in the early stages of their
careers are also welcome to submit proposals. Those submitting individual papers
should send a 500-word abstract and a 1-page CV. All proposals and CVs must
include the participant’s name, institution, department, mailing address, phone
number, and email address. Your name should appear on the upper right-hand
corner of each page.
The
deadline for the submission of proposals is
Proposals and CVs will be accepted by email (please attach the documents as
either a Word or RTF file), fax or regular mail. Send proposals to the attention
