Larry Hollingworth spent 30 years in the British army; on retirement he became a field officer for UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees), assigned to Yugoslavia. A striking and media-friendly figure, he gained both grudging respect from officials and unusual affection from combatants and citizens for the way in which he carved out improbable supply routes for humanitarian aid in the Bosnian War. His experiences in Bosnia-Hercegovina, including Sarajevo and the safe areas, are vividly recounted in his book, Merry Christmas, Mr. Larry (London, Heinemann, 1996).
