Lancy Fellowships for Summer Research
The Center for Ethics and World Societies will be
awarding several summer research fellowships to students who wish
to pursue an independent research project
related to past and present themes of the Center for Ethics and
World Societies. These topics include:

and the State Corruption: Wealth, Power and Democracy |
Students receiving fellowships will conduct research under the supervision of faculty members in a range of difference departments who have interests and expertise in these and associated areas. Normally, students will have completed their sophomore or junior years, but students of any class may apply. Projects normally last 8 to 10 weeks. While projects may include an off-campus component, students receiving summer research fellowships are expected to be resident at Colgate for a significant portion of the project. The fellowship award is $325 per week of full-time research. On-campus housing is provided through the support of the Lancy Foundation and the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty from May 28th to August 4th.
Lancy Fellows will meet as a group approximately once a week during the summer with the Director of the Center for Ethics and World Societies to discuss their research and also issues pertaining to the Center. Lancy Fellows are expected to participate in the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) during the 2001 spring term, and support for attending the conference is provided.
Students seeking to apply should pick up an application form from of the Office of the Center for Ethics and World Societies in 219 Alumni Hall and also consult with a faculty sponsor to discuss the preparation of the proposal. The proposal should be approximately 5 to 7 pages and should describe the following components of the proposed research:

The faculty sponsor should also send a confidential letter to the Director of University Studies in which the faculty comments on the worthiness of the project for summer research and the quality of the research proposal, the ability of the student to complete the project and to work independently, and the plan for faculty supervision of the research project.
These materials should be submitted to the office of the Center for Ethics and World Societies (219 Alumni) by Wednesday, March 15, 2000. Awards will be announced in early April.
