Laurence
Hauptman is SUNY Distinguished Professor of history at the State
University of New York at New Paltz, where he has been coordinator
of the Native American studies program since 1974. Since 1989
Hauptman has been general editor of the “Iroquois and Their
Neighbors” book series published by Syracuse University Press. A
recipient of many awards for his scholarship and service, Hauptman
has testified and prepared public policy research reports
regarding Seneca Nation land issues for the U.S. Senate, the New
York Governor’s office, and the Seneca Nation. A prolific
author, his most recent book is Conspiracy of Interests: Iroquois Dispossession and the Rise of New York
State (Syracuse University Press, 1999) and he is currently
preparing a book-length research project on “Daniel Bread and
the Transplanting of Oneida Indian Existence from New York to
Wisconsin, 1800-1873.”
