1943-46, honorably discharged; practicing attorney in
Cleveland, OH, since 1954; numerous civic awards including
Cleveland Branch, NAACP and the U.S. Commission on Civil
Rights; past chairman, Ohio State Bar Association Criminal
Justice Committee; past chairman, Congressional Black
Caucus; past president, Congressional Black Caucus
Foundation, Board of Trustees, the Martin Luther King, Jr.
Center for Social Change, and Executive Committee, Cuyahoga
County Democratic Party; lectured and wrote articles for
universities and bar associations; member of numerous civic
and legal organizations; Methodist, St. Paul A.M.E. Zion
Church; married Jeanette (Jay) Francis; four children:
