New User – Follow the below steps if you have NOT previously configured news services:

  1. Click Mail icon on toolbar of Internet Explorer

  2. Click Read News

  3. The Internet Connection Wizard will launch and request setup information

  4. Enter your Display Name -- appears in the from field when you post/send messages to a newsgroup (e.g. Judy Doherty) then click [Next]

  5. Enter your E-Mail Address – this enables people to reply directly to you (e.g. jdoherty@mail.colgate.edu) then click [Next]

  6. Enter the Internet News Server Name: news.colgate.edu
    Be sure to check the box labeled “My news server requires me to logon” then click [Next]

  7. Enter the News Server Logon Information then click [Next]
    Account name: newsuser
    Password: newspass
    Do not check the box labeled "Logon using SPA"

  8. Click [Next] to continue

  9. Click [Finish]

  10. You will get an Outlook Express dialogue box informing you that you have not subscribed to any newsgroups in this account – click [Yes] to view the list of available newsgroups

  11. The system will download the list of available news groups (this may take a few minutes, but only needs to be done once)

  12. Once the download is complete, the Newsgroups Subscriptions dialogue box will display.

  13. In the “Display newsgroups which contain field” type cews

  14. The Colgate-Newsgroup.cews newsgroup should display -- click the [Subscribe] button.

  15. Click the [GoTo] button to immediately go to that newsgroup using the IE Outlook Express Newsreader -- it should look something like this:

You can read messages, post messages, reply to the newsgroup and reply to and person who posted the message.
