Serious Matter of True Joy: Building a Concert Hall in 19th century Leipzig

Nancy Ries and Karen Harpp, Co-Directors

Mustard gas and Napalm, submarines and B-52s, A-bombs and Agent Orange, landmines and Star Wars: emblems of human genius and tools of global destructiveness, weapons have profoundly shaped the history, politics, and consciousness of the last century.

During 2004-2005, Colgate’s Center for Ethics and World Societies will focus on the theme of “Weapons and War.” A year-long series of public lectures, exhibits, films, courses and research projects will explore the meanings, effects, and ethics of weapons and war in the world today.
