CEWS Profile: Adonal Foyle

Adonal Foyle graduated from Colgate University in 1998 with a degree in History (Magna Cum Laude).  He is presently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Sports Psychology at the John F. Kennedy University in Moraga, California. Drafted as a first round lottery pick in 1997, he is a veteran NBA Center, now playing for the Golden State Warriors. In 2001, he founded Democracy Matters to give college students a voice in the pro-democracy movement and an active role in the national dialogue on money in politics. Foyle has spoken passionately about Democracy Matters and the importance of student engagement in democracy at hundreds of high schools, universities, and civic associations, including the American Bar Association, the Law School of the University of California (Boalt Hall), and the New York Conference on Campaign Finance Reform and Communities of Color.  The NBA has twice recognized Foyle for his commitment to democracy with their “Community Assist Award” and he received the prestigious Change Agent Award from the Greenlining Institute for his pursuit of campaign finance reform. The City of San Francisco also has honored him with the Sports Hero Award.  Foyle’s political engagement has been widely hailed in the press, including The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, USA Today, The Nation, The Congressional Quarterly, Mother Jones, ESPN Magazine, the Chicago Tribune Magazine as well as numerous local newspapers.
