Getting around in the US
 
Out-of-Town Bus/Train Service
     Greyhound (735-4471) and Chenango Valley/Shortline (315) 797-2550 bus lines provide bus service to other points in the U.S. Shortline buses stop on Colgate campus. Buses go to Utica and Binghamton, where you can make connections to other destinations.
     Train service is provided by Amtrack (1-800-872-7245). The nearest train station is located in Utica, which is approximately 45 minutes from the University.

Airlines
     The Syracuse Airport services the major airlines in the Eastern United States. Reservations for flights should be made in advance by contacting the specific airline. Most international flights leave from New York City. The Syracuse Airport is approximately 60 minutes away from the University by car.

Driver's License
     To drive in the United States, you must have one of the following:
  • your home country's driving permit and an International Driver's Permit issued in your home country;
  • a U.S. driver's license
     An International Driver's Permit is generally not valid for more than a year from the date of issue. It may also need to be validated for use in the United States. You must check the same upon arrival the U.S. with the Department of Motor Vehicles. To obtain a U.S. license, you must apply to the appropriate agency in your state or district. You first need to get a driver's permit and then take a driving test. You must present various forms of identification in order to obtain a permit. For information about testing and fees, contact:

     CIC organizes trips each semester to the Department of Motor Vehicles for international students to obtain driver's permits.
