Working in the United States

The procedures for working on campus are very simple. During the academic year, go to the Student Aid Office for information on campus jobs. For summer jobs, you will need to go to the Human Resources Office.
There are several types of off-campus employment that may be available to international students.  You must consult Lisa Hally in the International Student Program Office about obtaining authorization from USCIS for any type of off-campus employment. After graduation, you may be eligible to be employed in a job that is directly related to your major field of study for one year. Such employment may take place at any location in the U.S.
For more information on the procedures, drop by the Office of International Student Advising in 112 McGregory Hall.

U.S. Taxes
In 1992, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced all foreign students in the US on F-1, J-1 and M-1 visas are required to file a 1040NR TAX FORM.

Some important points to remember:
  • You must file these two forms even if you did not earn any income in the U.S.
  • Income includes that earned either on or off-campus, and scholarships from Colgate University (the portion used for tuition, books and fees is not taxable, however the portion used for room, board and other expenses is taxable)
  • If you earned income, the forms are due APRIL 15 (if you earned and owe any taxes, there will be a penalty assessed and you will owe interest)
  • If you did not earn income, the forms are due JUNE 15.
Please note that there are tax treaties that may affect whether you owe any taxes on income earned in the U.S., including scholarships. It is often wise to discuss your 1040NR Form with a qualified Certified Accountant before you send it in. As a courtesy for international students, the Office of Accounting at Colgate often provides assistance with filing tax forms until as late as the end of March.
PHOTOCOPY YOUR FORMS AND PERSONAL CHECK OR MONEY ORDER (if you owe anything) BEFORE MAILING. Mail the forms certified mail, and keep the copy in your carry-on luggage whenever you depart the U.S. (especially in the summer when going home) to certify that you filed these forms in compliance with IRS regulations.
More in depth information about filing the tax form and accompanying statement will be sent to you in February each year. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Hally, International Student Advisor, 116 McGregory Hall, Telephone: 315 228-7493.
