John Charles Cochran
John Charles Cochran, Professor of
Chemistry at Colgate from 1966 received the Phi Eta Sigma Teacher of the
Year Award in 1987, and the Sidney J. and Florence Felton French
Teaching Award in 1999.
Professor Cochran served multiple terms
as Chair of the Department of Chemistry and was Acting Associate Dean of
Students from 1976 to 1978. A champion of faculty-student collaborative
research, he was elected in 1994 to the first of two terms as a
Councilor for the Chemistry Division of the Council on Undergraduate
Research-a national professional organization that encourages the
development of research programs at undergraduate institutions. He
served as Colgate's Coordinator for Undergraduate Research from 1991 to
1994 and 1998-1999. Professor
Cochran has been a tireless mentor, friend, and inspiration to 101
research students in his 35 years at Colgate, and he has published some
15 articles with student co-authors. For these efforts and for his
support of the Colgate Journal of the Sciences for literally decades, we
dedicate this edition of the CJS to Professor Cochran.
