Colgate University

The Caribbean Students Association at Colgate University began in 1985 as the West Indian Students Association (WISA) with only a few students. Today, however, the Association can boast a much larger membership. Throughout the years, the Association has grown with the expanding Caribbean student population, though membership is not limited to Caribbean students. While the majority of Caribbean Students at Colgate are from Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago, there have also been representatives from Haiti, Puerto Rico, St. Vincent, St. Thomas (USVI), Cuba, Grenada, Antigua, Guyana and the Dominican Republic who, at some point, have graced the Colgate campus.

Caribbean graduates from Colgate University include lawyers, medical doctors, professors, guidance counselors and NBA players. We have consistently exemplified the all around excellence that defines Colgate University. Our current members have declared majors all across the disciplines - ranging from Molecular Biology and Music to Economics and Japanese. Over the years, Colgate CSA has also had water polo players from Trinidad’s National Team, swimmers from the Jamaican National Team, and many other athletes that perform at the highest level of competition in this Division 1 University.

CSA has consistently been able to boast a large representation in the arts. Our dancers continually share the creativity and originality of the Caribbean at Dancefest. Our artists have shared their talents through song, instruments (including pan, guitar and piano), film and poetry. The Caribbean Students Association has proved over the years to be a vital part of the Colgate community, especially now as the University attempts to become more diverse. The presence of CSA as a decade’s old organization is a testament to these efforts, but by increasing diversity in the minds of this seemingly homogeneous community, CSA will truly have begun to make its impact.
