A Brief History of CUTV

CUTV began as an idea in Barret Lester’s head, way
back in 1981. Despite stiff opposition, Lester, who
was a freshman, eventually landed the funding
necessary to start the station. In its early years,
CUTV had a large membership with upwards of fifty
students. They produced such shows as the Colgate
Dating Game, 13 Minutes (news), the NFL show,
Outtakes and Mistakes, and many more. These shows
were broadcast in the COOP for the whole student
body to see. The late 80’s were consistent as
well. Under the leadership of such dedicated
general managers as Pete Lamb, Paul Musilli and Liz
Kommer, several shows were produced even though
funding was hard to come by. Finally, in 1992
Robert “Tex” Johnson, the general manager at the
time, convinced the university administration that
CUTV needed its own channel. It was Johnson who
decided on channel 13. Thanks to his efforts, CUTV
reaches all 2,400 students who live on campus.
