Jackie Z. Brooks' short story, "Boeuf Madagaskara," was recently published by Glimpse, an overseas publication of National Geographic that specializes in stories from people who live or have lived and work abroad. Jackie's story was originally published in February and is now available at glimpse.org.

Conference alum Xand Lourenco and a group of Colgate students have recently started a literary magazine dedicated to storytelling. Please feel free to browse their website at storytellersdigest.com and submit your own material. The site also has a message board where writers can post and critique drafts.

Mississippi Magazine recently published a short piece from Linda Rains Allman's memoir. The piece, The Eupora Steps, profiles the town of Eupora, Mississippi, where Linda's father grew up. It appears in the current issue in the section entitled Being Southern. You need to subscribe to read the piece online, but you can see the companion piece on the town of Eupora at mismag.com without subscribing.

Congratulations to Rachael Ikins who recently won first prize in the 2008 National Penwomen Poetry and Art competition for her poem "Deja Vu." Another piece, "A Summer's Grief," received an honorable mention. Additionally, Rachael's poem "Book Club" will be displayed with other artwork at the Syracuse YMCA Downtown Writers Center this month. In other news, Rachael recently read at Hamilton's MAD art co-op at the Women's History Month HER-story event.

Dennis McFadden has had a number of short stories published since his stay at the 2006 Conference. His stories have appeared in the summer 2007 issue of The Saint Ann's Review, the summer 2007 issue of Permafrost, and the winter 2008 issue of CutBank. Additionally, he has had the featured story in two issues of the South Carolina Review: fall 2006 and fall 2007. Finally, Dennis also has the lead story in the winter 2007 issue of the Missouri Review.

Valerie Ann Leff's latest story, "Metafiction: Reading Lolita Under Book Contract," was recently published by Southwest Review in its winter 2008 issue. Valerie also sends word that she's teaching private writing classes in Edwards, Colorado and will be joining the faculty of Denver's Lighthouse Lit Fest this summer.

Rachael Ikins reports that The Healing Muse, a journal published by the Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, will publish several photographs and one of her poems in its October 2008 edition. Additionally, Rachael is working on a chapbook which will be published by Turtle Ink Press. The chapbook, entitled From the Lost Years: 1990-2000, will contain poems, photography, and one short story.

Richard Jeffrey Newman announces that a new Rumi reader has been published by Mazda Publishers in California. The reader, A Bird in the Garden of Angels, is on the poetry section for which Richard collaborated with John Moyne. You can find the book, which contains samples of all of the genres in which Rumi wrote, some never before translated, here.

Last month, Rachel Ikins wrote to say that her poem, “Flashback,” will be published in an anthology entitled Coevolution 2: Shivering through the Details. Just in case you needed anymore incentive to pick up a copy, Emily Vogel wrote to say that her poem “Ancient Calligraphy” will also be published in the same issue. Again, Coevolution 2 will be published by Turtle Ink Press. Look for it in 2008.

Paul Hamill has been quite busy recently. In addition to publishing poems in several journals and serving as Tompkins County’s Poet Laureate for 2006-2008, Paul has competed in several poetry contests. He was recently named a finalist in the Ann Stanford contest; he took 2nd place for his poem “A Midcentury Advent” in the Tom Howard Poetry Contest; and he received an honorable mention in the 2006 Winning Writers War Poetry Contest. The latter two poems are available online for anyone interested. Additionally, Paul received a state arts commission grant to conduct readings and workshops for venues accessible to senior citizens in Tompkins County.

Peter Balakian was recently awarded the Movses Khorenatsi medal at the behest of President Robert Kocharian of Armenia. The medal is one of Armenia’s highest civilian honors, given for creative achievements in Armenian culture, arts, literature, education, and the humanities.

Jenny Smith’s first book, The Comeback Season, published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, will be out on March 4th. You can find it online at Amazon. Additionally, Jenny has also sold her second book, another YA novel. That one will be out in the summer of 2009.

Jamie Lee’s novel Washaka --The Bear Dreamer won a Ben Franklin Award, was a finalist in the PEN USA Literary Awards, and was accepted into the Accelerated Reader and Scholastic Reading Counts programs for schools. You can read excerpts here. Jamie has also been busy with her new charitable project, The Bead People. You can read about this program at http://thebeadpeople.org/, including the origin story The Wind of a Thousand Years, published by Many Kites Press.

Hope Jordan coached the first team from New Hampshire ever to participate in the National Poetry Slam. The event took place in Austin, Texas, from August 7th – 11th. You can read more about it here.

Three of Marilyn Gelman’s recent stories and essays have been or will be published shortly. You can find “Strange Bedfellows” in A Cup of Comfort for Dog Lovers, published by Adams. The publication date is September, but you can order a copy online now. Next, Marilyn’s story “A Single Guy Again” (a working title) will appear in October’s edition of True Confessions magazine. Additionally, the March issue of True Love magazine included “My Hubby, the Neighborhood Monster.”
