How it all began

At the 4th annual Green Summit in October of 2005 our group came together with a goal of starting a community bike program at Colgate. The original Green Bikes group consisted of:

Tara Meyer '07
Leslie Safier '06
Zach Hicks '09
Randy Fuller, Professor of Biology
Heidi Johnson '07
Erin Shope '06
Adam Dale '98, Associate Director of Outdoor Education (Fall '01-Spring '06)
Peter Creigh '06
Howie Amman

Mission

The mission of Green Bikes is to provide the Colgate and Hamilton community with inexpensive, convenient, human-powered transportation to decrease reliance on automobiles.

The Story

The group initially solicited and recieved donations of used bikes for the program in the spring of 2006. Of the 25 bikes recieved only about 5 were in functional condition. Those 5 bikes have been in use on campus in a much less formal version of the program.

The effort has been continued during the '06-'07 academic year by Zach Hicks '09 and Brett Zefting, Assisstant Director Outdoor Education. After weighing the cost of maintenance on the old bikes vs. new ones, we made the decision to purchase new.

With the generous support of the Wellness Initiative, The Environmental Council, and the Broad Street Initiative we have purchased an initial fleet of 12 bikes and locks and are starting the program this summer.
