This seminar is the culmination of the Environmental Studies Program and it
embodies the goals of the program of teaching environmental studies students to
think, speak, and write clearly about environmental issues from a variety of
perspectives. The students participate in class discussions of important
environmental issues and this year, they worked on interdisciplinary group
projects associated with an environmental audit of Colgate. The purposes of this
audit were to identify and assess different environmental issues on campus and
provide suggestions to be used by the administration to reduce the University’s
environmental impact. The project topics covered during the fall 2002 included a
Greenhouse Gas Emissions inventory to identify carbon emissions sources on
campus, electricity use, radon and indoor air quality in representative campus
buildings, an analysis of the Colgate Heating Plant operations and a campus-wide
survey of student environmental preferences. During the spring 2003 semester the
class focused on waste stream and transportation issues, in addition to
conducting a green building survey of several university owned buildings and a
campus-wide survey of students to determine environmental attitudes, behaviors
and issues on campus. The waste stream group focused on quantifying the amount
of waste produced by the university, while the transportation group explored the
amount of student driving on campus, shuttle bus use and the university vehicle
fleet.
