Celebration of Earth Day

Next Tuesday, April 22, marks the thirty-third celebration of Earth Day, and Colgate will be holding a celebration of unprecedented proportions in honor of the international holiday. The “All-Campus Earth Day Celebration Day of Action” on the Academic Quad will be the venue for speakers, food, games and other festivities. One of the most important activities the coordinators plan to hold is the official kick-off and public display of the Green Strides Mission Statement, a pledge composed from this January’s Colgate Green Summit.

Sponsors of Colgate’s 2003 Earth Day include Outdoor Education and the Center for Community, Outreach and Volunteerism (COVE), and each Volunteer Colgate group will be involved in educational booths regarding their organization’s activities and issues. The information provided will be a way to celebrate the actions taken by Colgate groups and also provide a gateway for students to take further action.

In keeping with the Day of Action theme, the Green Summit will be celebrated by announcing the ‘Green Strides’ taken by students, faculty and staff since the January Summit. The official mission statement from the summit will be on display in order to encourage the celebration of past and ongoing strides, as well as to promote future actions by the Colgate and Hamilton communities. Several speakers will talk about their initiatives in reference to the greater Colgate and Hamilton community Green Strides.

Outdoor Education and the COVE have also organized several games and activities for which they have extended an invitation to the entire Colgate and Hamilton Community. A free barbeque will also be sponsored by Outdoor Education and the COVE. All events are outdoors on the Academic Quad in order to attract participation from as many students, faculty, staff and community members as possible. The events begin at 11:30 a.m., with speakers starting at noon. “This is a big event and it’s unprecedented,” Co-Director of Outdoor Education Molly Baker said.
