| The first Green Summit was held January 14 and 15, 2003.
The
purpose of the Green
Summit is to bring together students,
faculty, staff and administrators in order to establish a shared vision for
building the environmental future of Colgate.
The Green Summit will serve to increase
communication and collaboration between participants who represent a wide range
of organizations, departments and operating areas within the University. An
additional goal of the Summit is to build community through an experiential
process that necessitates interactive problem solving and shared intelligence.
During this 2-day “think tank”, participants will
work together to create a Green Print for Colgate that will promote
greener day-to-day operations at both the University and individual
levels. The Summit is intentionally designed as a “think tank”
rather than as a retreat, conference or committee meeting, in order
to facilitate efficiency in creating the Green Print.
Green Summit Information:
Green Print
The Green
Print is a strategic plan that will
outline the environmental path of the University including prioritized
initiatives to be implemented. This shared vision will enable the University to
leverage its physical, financial and human resources in order to reduce
environmental impacts in a collaborative manner, from inception to
action.
Initiatives contained in
the Green Print will be targeted at two levels: University-wide polices and
operations (e.g. use of organic fertilizers), and educational efforts about
green choices that can be made in day-to-day life at an individual
level.
Comprised of both short
and long-term initiatives, the Green Print will outline steps to be taken as
well as corresponding timelines for implementation. Various organizations,
departments, offices and individuals will take responsibility for implementing
initiatives. Once a Green Print initiative is implemented into action, it
becomes a Green Stride.

Green Strides
Green
Strides are steps taken by the
University on an ongoing basis to reduce environmental impacts. Green Strides
have been made in numerous areas of the University such as grounds keeping,
printing and transportation, to name a few. Some of the recent Green Strides to
be celebrated include:
- On-campus fertilization using 100% organic
fertilizer
- Expanded use of recycled papers, including
100% recycled content in white copier paper, and commodity envelopes with
50% post-consumer content
- Shuttle busses equipped with EPA-approved
low-emission diesel
engines.
To ensure
that Green Strides will continue to be made and in order to institutionalize
them as a University priority, the Green Print will be reevaluated on a yearly
basis at the annual Green Summit. The dynamic nature of the Green Print will
foster a collective and ongoing commitment to the University’s
environmental future.

and a listing of potential initiatives to be included in the Green Print.
