Elizabeth Strout
Raised in small towns in New Hampshire and Maine, Elizabeth Strout always expected to be a writer. There never seemed to be any real sense of choice about the matter, and she began writing stories at a very young age. She attended Bates College, concentrating on Theater and English, and graduated in 1977. Hoping to avoid the business of a full time job, she moved to Oxford, England, where she worked in a pub, cleaned houses for professors, and continued to write sto-ries. A year later she returned to New England and played the piano in bars, work-ing also as a secretary, a cocktail waitress, and as a model for an artist.

Amy and Isabelle
by Elizabeth Strout
In this stunning novel, Elizabeth Strout evokes a teenager's alienation from her distant motherand a parent's rage at the discovery of her daughter's sexual secrets. In a style that has drawn comparisons to many great literary voices, Strout reveals deep affection for her characters and a profound appreciation for the fragility of human happiness. When Amy is discovered behind the steamed windows of a car with her math teacher, the vast and icy distance between mother and daughter becomes apparently unbridgeable. Yet when news of the scandal spreads through town, it is Isabelle who suffers from the harsh judgments of Shirley Falls, intensifying the shame of her own past. Wise and haunting, AMY AND ISABELLE announces a powerful new talent.
