Why Autism?
In 2011, The Colgate women’s hockey team created a project in support of Kati Wiliams, a local teenager from Norwich, who has been an avid fan of Colgate Women’s hockey for several years and now works as the team manager. Kati has Asperger’s Syndrome, which is an autism spectrum disorder. Kati is the reason and our inspiration for the creation of this project.

Kati and her family have become a special part of our team and someone that we all look up to for her courage. We all have seen her progress thanks to the great people at Norwich High School and the Family Resource Network. It is one of our goals to raise funds for local, regional and national agencies that assist families impacted with Autism.

Our team partnered with Autism Speaks U, a part of Autism Speaks, to create a new chapter at Colgate to assist us in educating the Colgate community. Our 2011 events were extremely successful. We raised over $18,000 for our chosen charities, raised significant awareness through our outreach, made new friends and were able to educate the Colgate and surrounding communities. We also took part in the Walk Now for Autism event and were recognized by the National Hockey League (NHL) for our efforts at the 2011 Face-Off for a Cure gala in April.

For 2012, we are looking to continue to build on the momentum we created in 2011 and add new and exciting elements through new partnerships and initiatives. We also have a goal of raising $30,000, broadening our outreach efforts, increasing our game attendance and providing resources and networking for people on the Autism Spectrum.
