Colgate University was recently ranked 16th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. The university’s strategic plan offers a blueprint for turning today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders, joining the scores of alumni already playing major roles in a variety of fields. Colgate combines the rigorous academic demands of a university with the intimate classroom setting of a liberal arts college.
A student's academic program includes four courses from the liberal arts core, courses in a concentration, electives, and a first-year seminar.
The average class size at Colgate is 19 students (the student to faculty ratio is 10 to 1). Class size varies according to the level and type of course, but there are more than twice as many classes with 20 or fewer students as there are with 30 or more.
Independent study, honors and high honors are offered for all concentrations. Most departments offer minors as well. Finally, a growing number of research opportunities are available during the school year and summer. Colgate students often conduct research projects normally reserved for students in graduate school. We also have a well developed Summer Undergraduate Research Program.
Academic departments and interdisciplinary programs offer 51 concentrations (majors), or a student can work with faculty to design a more personalized, topical concentration. One-third of each student's classes will be electives, allowing a great deal of creativity in course selection.
All Colgate courses are taught by faculty; there are no teaching assistants. Senior faculty often teach first-year and core courses, and students frequently collaborate with faculty on their research. Ninety-eight percent of the 226 full-time faculty have achieved the highest degree expected in their fields. While teaching is their primary responsibility, they are also active researchers, authors, artists, performers, and regular contributors to their professional disciplines.

Colgate prepares its students for many post-graduate options. The liberal arts curriculum allows Colgate students to become researchers, develop strong written and oral communication skills and to be great problem solvers—just the types of skills that graduate schools and corporations seek the most. Last year over 200 organizations actively recruited through the on-campus interview and resume referral programs. Colgate students are very successful in the job market and in gaining admission to graduate school. In fact, within one year of graduation, 98% are employed or attending graduate or professional schools full-time.
