Colgate University is a member of the NCAA, ECAC and Patriot Leagues and diligently adheres to the rules put forth by those organizations. This page will give you an abbreviated version of the most common recruiting rules questions that we receive. It is NOT intended to be comprehensive list. If you have any questions concerning the NCAA, check out NCAA ONLINE.
Letters, E-mail and Correspondence
- NCAA rules prohibit us from sending any recruiting materials vie e-mails or letters to you until September 1st of your Junior Year (Grade 11) in High School.
- You may write us letters or E-mail at any time.
- As of August 1st, 2007 the only electronic recruiting communication we can initiate to you is via e-mail or fax, all other types are banned (including, instant messenger programs, text messaging)
- You can still send us a text message but we would have to respond by e-mail or phone
- We cannot respond to an instant message.
- However, after you have signed an NLI at Colgate, we can use IM or text messaging to contact you.
Phone Calls
- NCAA rules prohibit us from initiating any phone calls to you until July 7th following your Junior Year (Grade 11) in High School.
- For Seniors, NCAA rules prohibit us from initiating a call where we speak to you more than once per week.
-- EXCEPTION: We may make an unlimited number of phone calls to you in the five days preceding your Official Visit to Colgate.
- A phone call made by us, where we speak about Colgate with your parents, is considered a call to you and must adhere to the above rules.
- You may phone us at any time, at any age (or grade) and as often as you wish.
-- However, realize that, if you (or your parents) leave a message, one of the above rules may prohibit us from returning your call.
Off Campus Contacts
- An Off-Campus Contact is any face-to-face contact, not on Colgate's Campus, between a member of our staff and you or your parents where any dialogue in excess of a greeting is exchanged.
- We are not permitted to make an Off-Campus Contact until after July 7th following your Junior year (Grade 11).
- We are permitted NO MORE THAN THREE Off-Campus Contacts with you (or your parents).
- We are NOT PERMITTED to make an Off-Campus Contact with you BEFORE OR DURING a game or Tournament in which you are competing.
-- For example, at a tournament we can only speak with you after your final game of the tournament.
Campus Visits
- An Unofficial Visit is a visit paid for entirely by you and/or your parents
- You may make as many Unofficial Visits to Colgate as you like and at any time.
- An Official Visit is a visit where we pay for any part or all of your visit to Colgate.
- You are permitted only one Official Visit to Colgate.
- You are permitted only FIVE Official visits total.
- Your Official Visit to Colgate must occur after September 1st of your Senior year (Grade 12).
- We will mail out Official Visit Invitations to those players for whom we would like to pay for an Official Visit to Colgate
- You cannot take an Official Visit until you have provided us with:
- a copy of your high school transcript (from Grade 9 through a completed Grade 11)
- A copy of your SAT or ACT test score report. AND
- You have registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse.

- NCAA Clearinghouse
- The NCAA Clearinghouse is where you can register online to be cleared to play collegiate atheltices. You should register as soon after you complete your Junior (Grade 11) year as possible.

- A must have publication for all prospective student athlete. It covers most all of the common NCAA Clearinghouse questions, including SATs, ACTs, Core Course Requirements, Amateur Status, and much more.
